FILM COSTUME CONCEPT & ILLUSTRATION

My engagement within the Costume Department on a feature film is very specific & embodies many roles. I am employed specifically at the 'Pre-production' stage by the Costume Designer and initially begin by conveying their ideas in the form of concept drawings. This in turn leads to a form of costume vernacular adherent to the feature with the drawings being presented to the Director, Producers and Studio for feedback. The process is often very organic, ideas drop from the collective whilst others gain ground and are pushed forward. Given my background in Portraiture, I'll begin to imbue concepts with actors likenesses, which is a boon, helping to sell the costume. Concepts develop into fully fledged drawings, which often become a form of blueprint and given that a Costume Department can be up to 40 personel strong, I work within a very collaborative team of Artisans and constitute a very small cog within a very large machine. The 'Blueprint' becoming the medium for all to follow.

Additionally and often as a result of my rendering a likeness, I am often thereafter employed to execute watercolours of the finished costumes for the purposes of marketing which become a factor of the press junket attached to the persona of the Costume Designer.
